Staffing Contractor Job Growth Continues

Despite high nationwide unemployment in April 2010, Contract Employment on the rise in New England

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in May that the unemployment rate increased to 9.9 percent in April, 2010 after three months of stability at 9.7.  The report did note that growth was reported in manufacturing, professional and business services, health care, leisure and hospitality, and government employment.

From a local perspective, early indicators from our clients in New England suggest a marked increase in contract openings over the past few months.  This is a strong sign that companies are beginning to have faith in a recovering economy and starting larger projects and reviving programs that have been on hold since economic downturn.  During the recession that started in December 2007, companies were concerned with cutting costs, this year as economists argue whether the recession is really over, some tenacious companies appear to be rebuilding, growing and increasing profits, while still keeping costs low with contract employees rather than permanent staff.
