Job Growth, Biotech leads in New England

The United States Department of Labor is reporting that the unemployment rate in New England decreased to 8.6% in June. The country’s unemployment rate remained essentially unchanged in July at 9.5%. Three of six New England states reported significantly lower unemployment rates than the rest of the country, New Hampshire (5.8%), Vermont (6.0%), and Maine (8.1%), in spite of the fact that Rhode Island ranks as the fourth highest unemployment in the country (11.9%).

Could this be a sign of good things to come? CEO of A&A Search, Andrius Montvila, says “Biotechs are adding more contract positions everyday and we expect an increase in demand this fall as companies continue to invest in their scientific and production growth.” It was reported that professional, scientific, & business services added 2,700 jobs in July, its second consecutive monthly gain this year. The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported that the private sector added 19,200 jobs this past July, which marked the sixth straight month of job gains in Massachusetts.
